Absolute Beginners Sewing
Learn basic sewing skills
No need to be scared of a sewing machine. This course is designed to ease you into sewing and not overwhelm you. You will learn fundamental skills through appropriate (and useable) projects that will have you creating your own masterpieces. We will go through the basics of how to use a machine – threading it, and general use. Then we will put these skills into practice and make some cool stuff. Each week you should have a finished project to show off.
Week 1: Draw String Bag.
Learn how to thread the machine and basic sewing skills.
Draw string bags can be any size and used for: library bag, swim bag, lunch bag, shopping bag, backpack, pencil case, packing cells, laundry bags or anything at all.
Cotton craft fabric will be provided for this project.
Week 2: Tote Bag
Building on week 1, you will learn how to trace and cut out from a pattern as you sew your own unlined tote bag. Along with basic bag construction, you will also create and attach your own fabric handles.
You will need to bring fabric for this project, which will be discussed at week 1.
Week 3: Straight sided Cushion Cover or Zippered Pouch
The focus of this project is learning how to insert a zip into straight fabric. Using all of your new sewing skills you will be able to make your own cushion covers and pouches of various sizes.
